The most Unconventional friendship

BOOK REVIEW-5

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaleed Hosseini

Which is the book that ripped my heart out of my chest with a help of a thousand needles and made me cry blood tears? Apologies for that gruesome and graphic description but that is what this book did to me. Its book is so dangerously heart-touching that I can challenge you for a No-Cry Bet.

There are many conventional friendship-themed books that have been recommended repeatedly. But this is a book that might not have friendship as its central theme, but the companionship of the two characters, how they connect on the same grounds that they both have been put against their will. This book is extremely close to my heart

The book is set in Afghanistan amidst the terror of war and bleached mindset of people. Under these pathetic circumstances, we are shown the characters of Laila and Mariyam. The age gap between both is a lot but the bond they established over time is very heartwarming to read.  Initially, when they meet they share a very strained relationship, but as time passes a beautiful relationship blossom which surpasses 'self'. As the characters grow in their personal spaces struggling at the insanely unfair and horrific experiences they both have. They start radiating towards each other. The bond developed, the problems faced, how they time and again try to help the other is painfully beautiful. I say painfully because while reading you would be screaming from inside that the things that are happening are not fair, are not supposed to happen.

This friendship is the best kind of friendship penned by any author. Maybe because it was so necessary for both Laila and Mariyam. Their friendship does work as a relief for their extremely difficult life.
This is the book that will make you cry in the middle of the night. It shows such horrors of the life in Afghanistan and the plight of these women that it is heart-wrenching, but at the same time, Khaleed has woven these horrors with linings of love so intricately and beautifully that it becomes an amazing experience in all.

One of the strongest points of this book is that. despite being a book that describes horror, terror, unfairness, inhumanity, helplessness, the central theme always remains as Love. You cry because your heart would be so full of love while reading this. And you wish, you could just hug the characters and give them chocolate just so that they smile for a moment.

A thousand splendid suns are undoubtedly one of the most fantastic books I have read. it's a 10 on 10 in every aspect- language, plot, storytelling, and characters.
