Love that rendered her Silent

BOOK REVIEW - 1

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

"Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive, and will come forth later, in uglier ways"     - Sigmund Freud

If I had to say about the book in one line, this would be it. The story follows two characters Alicia Berenson and Theo Faber and how their lives become intertwined in the most unforeseen way. Alicia is in mental care facility called the Grove after being accused of her husband's murder after which she stops talking. Nobody knows what happened on the night of the murder except her. Theo, who is aware of her case joins the Grove as her psychotherapist. He believes that he is the only one who can make her talk and help her. They seem to form a connection, as Alicia's past is dug up, the connection between them deepens.

This book switches between multiple points of view and Alicia's diary which leads up to the murder.

My thoughts, is this a fascinating book? Absolutely! The best thriller? Maybe not. This was precisely the first thriller book I ever read, hence, was expecting not to be able to guess the ending. But I did.

I won't state this point to be of any demerit, the reason being even if you guess the climax, the turn of events will leave you surprised nonetheless. At first, I was not very sure why I was reading about Theo's past, But he and Alicia have more in common than you think, and it all ties together very well in the last.

Your mind keeps racing to look for theories and connections while reading the individual stories and they are so intriguing that will keep you on the edge of the seat the whole time!

I loved the dark tone of the book and how it highlights the very important aspect of a traumatic childhood and parenting. At a point, I was surprised at the character of Theo, how he was so honest and good at his job when his personal life was so screwed. you are sure to feel sympathy and form a connection with the characters.

All in all, it was a very good read, and I totally recommend it!
